Do men or women make better doctors? There are some intriguing results to this. A research study led by the Harvard School of Health has come to the conclusion that females are better doctors than males. The researchers found that if treated by a female doctor, the patients had 4% lower risk of dying prematurely and 5% lower risk of being re-admitted to the hospital within 30 days.
Dr. Ashish Jha, who was overlooking the study, commented “There was ample evidence that male and female doctors practice differently”, the difference was seen in the way the patients were treated as female doctors are more patient-centred and they adhere to the provided medical guidelines in a better way. . The research showed a huge difference in the mortality rate, as the gender of the doctor/s is particularly significant for the sickest of patients.
The data indicates that when treated by female doctor things work in a way that will benefit the patient better. The study was conducted over 4 years with 1 million records. Within the research time it was seen that about 11% of patients treated by female doctors died within a month as compared to 11.5% treated by male doctors. And about 15% patients, who were treated by female doctors, had to be readmitted to the hospital as compared to 15.5% of those treated by male doctors. It seems like a small difference but if we look at the bigger scale, it adds up a lot of lives.
Researchers also considered whether patient outcomes are varied by specific conditions or by severity of illness. Also an estimate of 32,000 lives could be saved if all doctors could work and take care of their patients like female doctors do.
What makes women better doctors than men?
However, it isn’t very clear why there is a gender based difference in the care given to the patients. The authors of the research admitted that they cannot figure out why female doctors have better outcomes than male counterparts, but that can come down to the part where maybe female doctors communicate better being a little more emotionally intelligent, and better listeners than the doctors of their opposite gender.
As per the study, females are better at solving complex problems such as taking care of the patients and understanding the needs better by being good at recognizing the core of the issue.
Why male doctors are paid higher salaries than female doctors?
There exists a huge pay gap between male doctors and female doctors. A previous study had found out that male doctors are paid an average of $250,000 and female doctors are paid $163,000 a year and still the female doctors pay more attention to the patients. Some have argued that females are paid lesser salaries because there can be career interruptions, like work-home responsibilities, childrearing which can lead to females compromising the quality of care they provide. However, judging the rewards of a woman employee on the basis of her gender is ethically wrong.
Similarly, it is very objective to say that male doctors do not communicate well despite the study showing that female doctors on an average communicate well thus being more effective in treating the patient well and preventing death.
